Layer up for winter

Layer up for winter

It has been absolutely freezing here in London recently. It is 0 degrees centigrade this morning.

Winter has definitely arrived. It is time to keep warm and layer up. I start with thermal underwear. This year there are excellent ranges available. I popped into Uniqlo (USA link} last week and stocked up on their basic Heatgen range. MarksandSpencer also offers an excellent collection of thermal underwear. They have some very pretty tops with lace trims. They also offer a more expensive range with silk or cashmere added to the fabric. These are really soft and cosy. The US MarksandSpencer site also has a good selection of thermals.

I have just bought this black lace sleeved beauty. It will be ideal worn under my dresses on a cold winter’s evening. If you have a sleeveless dress this top could be used to cover your arms and add both glamour and warmth. I have a sleeveless black tunic that will be given a new lease of life with the addition of this top. I will also be wearing it with a pair of slim black trousers and ankle boots for an evening out.

I love roll neck thermals. I have just bought a navy one from Uniqlo. They are ideal to pop under a V neck sweater to add colour and keep you cosy. Turquoise roll neck thermal vest.

If you prefer something classic. I have been wearing this style for years

Hello Josephine what a good blog and a reminder for me to look for some thermal vests! I am one of life’s cold creatures and layering helps a lot. I took on board about wearing a size that flatters too! As you said who sees the label!
I have just read your advice about what to keep/take out of your wardrobe. Very good comments. I live in a small flat with limited wardrobe space so I need to start having a clear out recognise that there are things I never wear or don’t suit me anymore.
May I wish you and your family a very happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year.

Thank you for your comment Carol. I was very glat of my thermals this morning as we did a photoshoot in Richmond Park and it was absolutely freezing.

I like the Damart thermal vests with a wide square stretch lace neckline. I’ve found that some vests are too high around the neck and show when you are wearing a top or dress. I get long sleeves to wear under wool and short sleeves for three quarter sleeved styles. They last for years!

    Hi Lynda
I do have some Damart and they do last well. If you buy the Uniqlo scoop neck it fits under most necklines.

I loved shopping Uniqlo when I lived in Asia. The brand has only moved into Canada fairly recently and opened a store in Vancouver in October. We’ll be spending Christmas with family there, so I can hardly wait to go shopping!

I hope you manage to get a pair. I love mine

Just what i needed. We’re going to Washington DC in January. COLD. Especially because I live in Southern California, where it just doesn’t get that cold. So I’m in the business of shopping for my January trip. Looks like Uniglow is the place to go for layering. Thanks.

I can thoroughly recommend the Marks and Spencer’s heatgen thermal top. I have them in a variety of colours
and they work perfectly by keeping me warm underneath jumpers and cardigans. They are my winter go to.

It is a toss-up as to which I prefer the Marks or the Uniqlo ones. I have both and they are slightly different.
