What to wear to the opera

Outside Royal Opera House

The Auditorium – This picture was taken some time ago as you will no longer  the sartorial elegance of men in formal black tie.

An invitation to the opera this week was a very special and wonderful treat. A truly luxurious experience. So it was with great excitement that we dressed up on Monday for an evening at the Royal Opera House with friends. I wore my tried and tested Nicole Farhi LBD accessorised with my real pearls, classic court shoes and black bag.
There is no official dress code at the Royal Opera house so you can wear what you want and will not be thrown out if you wear jeans (of which we saw 2 examples) however to me it seems a shame not to make an effort as I feel it adds to the excitement of the occasion.
A couple of outfits that I feel would fit the bill if you are an enthusiastic opera goer. If not both outfits might be very suitable for that fast approaching Christmas Day.  Watch this space I will have more hints and tips of how to dress with style and still be the the calm serene hostess/cook/general washer up etc. on the day.

Both great outfits! I was also shocked when we went to the LA Opera a few years ago and saw so many people in jeans. I appreciate that not everyone can afford or wants to wear black tie, but isn’t dressing up just a little bit a big part of the fun??

Here, I see much more of the second kind of outfit, dressy pant with top, than the cocktail dress, at the opera or theatre. And I would love that sequined jacket! Black tie is becoming rather quaint, except for the ball circuit and weddings. Too bad as any man looks dashing in black tie.
