Special occasion dressing

Special occasion dressing

It is that time of year again. Invitations to summer weddings, garden parties, charity events are beginning to arrive. Dress codes to have become more relaxed over the last few years. Trousers now seem to be acceptable at even the most formal of occasions. Even Royal Ascot allows trousers to be worn, as long as they have a matching top and therefore constitute a “trouser suit”. Even jumpsuits have become acceptable attire. The Steward’s enclosure at Henley Royal Regatta still require that shoulders be covered and dresses/skirts are worn on or below the knee. Trousers are not however acceptable in the Steward’s enclosure.

Another problem with special occasion dressing is the “wear once phenomenon”. Not a good use of our clothes budget. I have chosen items that in my opinion can be adapted after the big event. Wear the dress without the jacket, change the accessories et voila a simple summer outfit. Wear the white jacket with jeans and simple flats. The blue straw hat can be worn on the beach with a stunning 50s style swimsuit.

These are all beautiful choices, and can see how these would look fabulous, weather permitting, for that special occasion.

You’ve beautifully demonstrated the value of a wardrobe of great classic pieces that can be dressed up or down for any occasion except the most formal. The accessories are always key and, like you, I love my hats and any occasion is a great occasion during which I can wear one.

    Great post.
